New Jersey doctors use 3D printer to help save man with deteriorating skull

3D printer used to create “perfect puzzle piece” of patient’s skull

A 3D printer helped save the life of a New Jersey man whose skull was crumbling. The Navy veteran hopes others can learn from his battle

NEW YORK, NY, March 12, 2025 (CBS NEWS) —

Greg Morrison, a 63-year-old Navy veteran, underwent three surgeries after suffering a brain bleed and later discovering a tumor. Following these procedures, his skull began deteriorating, leading his neurosurgeon, Dr. Nitesh Patel, to use 3D printing technology to create a custom replacement piece for the damaged area. By using a 3D model based on Morrison’s CAT scan, Dr. Patel and his team were able to design a custom cranial implant that was a precise “puzzle piece” to fit the defect. Morrison fully recovered after the surgery in November, and now back at work, he’s grateful for the technology that helped him heal. He also treasures the 3D-printed replica of his skull, hoping his story inspires others facing tough challenges.
